Indian
Botanical Gardens in shibpur Howrah was founded in 1786 by Colonel Kyd ,
British East Indian company’s army officer.
Previously
this was known as The Hon'ble Company's Botanic Garden, Calcutta in 1860 this
was changed as royal botanical garden and later this was changed as Indian
botanical garden after independence. The main reason to built this garden was
research on some commercial plants and trees in south east Asia. Tea beverage
was first researched in this garden and later plants in Darjeeling and Assam, teak wood was researched over here for commercial production.
This
garden is one of the oldest and biggest botanical garden in Kolkata. There were
12,000 different varieties of plants and trees and 2.5 million dries species
collected from different parts of world for this her-barium when it was built.
1793
when William Roxburg, became the supremtendant of this garden turned his home
within the garden as main herbarium where he collect 2,500,000 items. His old building
was turn into library and café.
Some
of rare verities of trees and plants are available here for zoological
research. Different colleges and school visits time to time from all parts of
state and countries for zoological excursion.
The
main attraction of this garden was oldest banyan tree of this garden, which
spread in 404 sq.meters and this is one of the oldest tree in world .There is
one library also in this garden. Daily from morning to evening this garden was
opened. This is the best place for outing, fun, fiesta and frolics and also a
small lake with boating facility.
This
garden is also one of the favourite destinations for couple.
