Ganesh Puja in Kharagpur 2014

God ganesha is worship in every ritual funtion of Hindus, but ganesh chaturtthi and Sarvjanic Ganesh Puja is basically organized by south Indian community as well as other local clubs in Kharagpur. Before 1990 small puja pandals were made only in some locality of town but from 1990 onwards this puja organized in all locality of malancha, gatarpara, kumarpara, kharida, Bhagwanpur, New settlement, Jain nagar, Old Settlement, Golebazar, Jhapatapur, Nimpura etc.

This puja is celebrate from three days in most of the  puja committee but big budgeted and big clubs can organize this for one week or for ten days.

During this period most of the puja committees were organized different cultural as well religious program and different competition organized. Most famous program where, dance competition, quiz and song competition. Pandals are well decorated and lighting is also one another attraction of this puja. Only some problem arise for students due to high volume of loud speaker used by puja committees.

Most interesting theme pandal and idols made in Bhagwanpur, Bajrang boys club of Gatarpara, New settlement, Old settlement and Nimpura. Main problem faced by local club is only shortage of place to make pandals and stage as well as organize differ program due to huge crowed gathering near stage, which block road. Durgapuja is main festival and people went in different pandal to watch the decoration but Ganesh puja is basically locality puja and people in evening spent their time in their locality puja committee functions. Now in west Bengal other places also this puja started but still Kharagpur is only place , where this puja celebrate in big organized way. When I was in school I was also went to watch all function of this local puja committee. Bajrangboys club and one more in Gatarpara is my main puja pandal near to my home. But as my parent not allowed to stay out of house after 9.30 so I have to watch only one hour most of the program because they start most of interesting program from 8.30 to till mid night. One another interesting part of this puja was Bhog. In last day bhog distributed in locality, the taste of bhog really awesome if you ever get chance to go  Kharagpur during this festival than try to enjoy the taste of Bhog.In kharagpur basically Bhog made from rice, cereals and vegetable. Some pandals where distribute “khir” and some distribute “sweets”. From a long time I am not watching this puja, but all the memories of my school time still alive.

A person who belongs from this town know the celebration of Ganesh Puja .Ganesh Visarjan was equal important and participated by locality people as like other day function. Basically the youth participate in visarjan. Mostly visarjan was done in evening and night with decorative lights, sound system music and dancing with enjoyment. Most of the visarjan where done in mandir talab pond. After  ganesh puja people again start preparation for Durga puja in town. The only difference is that local club organized ganesh puja, where not participate in Durgapuja and in same way club participate in Durgapuja, where not organize Ganeshpuja. Main reason for that was space and budget requirement is different for both the puja.

As we are celebrating our 68th independence day,so today I am going to give information based on this. Independence day celebrate in all parts of country with same ethusiam ,KGP is also not different  from rest of the country. Here Independence day maily celebrate by school, college ,central and state Govt. offices and local club. When I was in school in morning  I was going to my school in white dress and with some flowers. Most of time I was participate in speech function organized by our school .Function mostly started by 9 or 9.30A.M. with flag hosting by our principal or any South Eastern Railway officer .After the flag hosting they gave a small speech and then our principal gave speech on freedom fighter of our country. In school level all those speech were really interesting but in college level I never interested to hear that speech. Some time speech competition arrange by school committee and some years we were represent our school in speech competition in other school.

We were return back to home near 10.30 or 11A.M. At the end we were getting cholate. In our returning way to home We also collect toffy/cholate from local club celebration .Most interesting decoration was in kumarpara area. other decoration of this local club same as like other clubs from town but the most interesting part was they place small toys ,robot and toy guns in display .All the day patriotic songs played in loudspeaker. In television patriotic theme based movies telecast whole day.Kranti and Saheed was definitely telecast in this day by Durdarsh and lateron satellite channeltelecast the same.

Things were changed when I was in college,I was feel same enthu for our independence but not interested to went my college in independence day celebration.I was watching documentary on discovery or patriotic movies on TV.One big change ,which I realize on that time was that patriotic songs played in loudspeaker till 12p.m. and than filmi and bolllywood songs played.

My article was not finish, if I was not discussing about the Anglo Indian community of this area.

Midnapur was definitely played a crucial role in Indian freedom movement, but Kharagpur town area was maily calm and cool ,people basically simple and indulge in there day to day activity so there was no big revolt happen in this railwaytown.

Kharagpur was one of the main British commercial place. Due to Kharagpur location and connectivity

British officer bunglow in Bunglowside

Kharagpur had some unique feature .Due to one of the important train root junction ,British started Bengal Nagpur Railway establish in 1904.Most of upperleve staff were British  so, a small british colony made for them in south side of the Kharagpur. This area well known as Bunglow side lateron. They built there club house ,which is now turn into officer club . They built school for there children,Churches .The architechture and planned development of this area show that this area was part of any european country.Today  due to some new building some changes come in this area but still western architechture available in old Bunglows. Anglo  Indian community of Kharagpur were very friendly .I didin’t got any information about any British atrocity by anyone .I heard about anglo Indian and colonial people lives from my late grand father. You can get the more information about that time from my previous post of Kharagpur 1940 back. Most of the anlo  people returned to Britain after 1947 and some were not interested to went back as they accept Kharagpur as their home. But number of anglo Indian community is very small and most of them lived in Hijli .

Sawan Purnima celebration in Kharagpur

In Kharagpur there are many shiv temples in every part of the town. Basically in other part of West Bengal there are not such a huge number of Shiv temples you can find. In Kharagpur only there is more than forty shiv temples. In Gatarpara and Bhagwanpur area only 10+ Shiv temples .In my childhood I am always take participate on weekly Shiv arti in my local area temple of Gatarpara. In Rakhipurnima/Shawan Purnima all the temples in Kharagpur decorated with flowers .When I was in school,I spent my whole day in Rakhi-purnima to look after the temple with some of my locality friends and clear all the flowers, leafs  and fruits from Shiv ling because due to huge gathering there other people unable to give flowers and fruits in shiv ling. I was really miss that fun in Rakhi-purnima, but the festival is still celebrate in same passion. In some temple Bhaajan and religious play organized on Rakhipurnima night.

In some areas Shiv Parwati idol establish as like Durga puja . From last couple of years local people mostly young and teenagers brings water from Kansawati River and pour in their local Shiv Temple. You can watch that in early morning of Rakhipurnima .In the whole month of savan, people from town went to tarkeswar, they collect water from Ganga River and pour in Tarkeswar shivling.

In this festival coconut demand is highest in town, other than this other fruits price also increased due to huge demand by people, who are fasting this day and eat only ate fruits and milk.

In Kharagpur you can find kanwar and ghat (water pot used in kanwar ), and t-shirt with god Shiva print, but gate bazaar area is most famous for low cost huge availability of such items.

In every Monday in the month of sawan all the shiv temple, there is a huge gathering by people. As this festival is celebrated in each colony’s shiv temple but in kharagpur Gole bazaar Shiv temple and Kharageswar temple have main attraction. Khargeswar temple is oldest shiv temple in town built by king Kharagesh and due to this temple name this town got the name of Kharagpur.

A journey from Howrah to Kharagpur in early morning

This Saturday I am returning to home after the busy week schedule in my office in Kolkata. As I am working in IT sector so whole day I spent in concrete jungle. In whole week I never see the sun and open sky, but when I returned home, I watch the beautiful suburb from the train window. The scenery is always looks good, but after rain when the whole area covered with green lair, than its beauty increases many folds. In Saturday morning I catch taxi to Howrah at 4 A.M. and catch early morning Midnapur local at 4.25 A.M. from Howrah. As July is rainy season and sky is covered with coloud and some fog is also due to pollution .Natural and suburb view started when train cross satragachi. I was sitting just beside the window and watching the open sky outside. I know what I was watching that was common in whole Bengal but the timing and view from train I can’t think same everywhere. As I am taking still photo graph from my mobile in running train so, picture clarity was little low, but in video you can really feel the charming of suburb. In the day time Kolaghat Bridge give a amazing look but in early morning in raininy season its looks that train cross only a canal. In my picture I was catching only the upper layer of tree but the lower part also had same beautiful.

I am not catching express or superfast in my journey from Howrah. The main reason behind that was I don’t want to miss this beautiful natural senaries. In express train also you get the same natural view but in express window are small and in local big windows with big gates, which increase visibility. Local train stop in all small station so you can easily watch the people and surrounding area of suburb .In my last post on madpur, one of my blog reader from USA, requesting me to upload some more information for madpur with picture, as because her father belong from madpur. As I am not having sufficient time to went there but this picture I think she definitely liked.
