You were already reading my last year Dashera and Ravan
dahan in kharagpur. This year also have good weather in town so people enjoy durgapuja and also
watching ravan dahan in ravan maidan gate bazaar area of Kharagpur .This year
was 89th ravan dahan celebration in that ground. This year Ravan was
made by Balaji mandir committee of old settlement golebazar. The main unique
feature was eye of Ravana. The eyelid was moving which was first time introducing
in this year.

The color of Ravana dress was green and height was 50 foots.
As I heard from my grandfather that till 1970 kharagpur was only place in West
Bengal where this festival organized in such a way. I also heard from him that
people from near about area (other part of medinipur , Bankura even from
Kolkata) came to watch this festival in Kharagpur. In recent time Ravan dahan
was also organized in other parts of state also, but still Kharagpur Ravan
Dahan festival was unique in many respects. In other places only Ravan dahan
was done but in Kharagpur still three different akhara came into ravan maidan
and show different events in this festival. From my childhood I was continue
watching Bajrang akhara of Kumarpara gatarpara area of town as my grandfather
late Dina Nath Singh was also support
Late Vishwanath Pratap Singh ,who was founder of Bajrang Akhara before
independence in Kharagpur.

Now a day’s Akhara culture went out of fashion and due to
this Akhara lost his old glory. Now the youth of town spent their time in
western GYM in place of Akhara. When I
was 5-6 years I was watching small boys youth on evening time learn different
steps from there instructors but with changing time no one came to learn our
old martial art. Twenty years back different events with sword, sticks, farsa
and other weapons organized in this festival but now only these arms were used
to decorate the Akhara board but no one able to show any steps.

Parents were not interested to send their children to Akhara
and administration and Police of local area also not support the Akhara
organizer in any events so this old heritage died in recent time.
I saw only some youth taking snap with different arms during
vijay dashmi but they didn’t know a single step with any of such weapon.
I don’t know what
will happen in future but yes we need to enjoy in present for such of our
heritage and glory of this beautiful town.
