One time this is the largest district in westbengal .For better administration and public welfare programme it divided in two part,east Midnapore and west midnapore.
Kharagpur comes in westmidnapore district .West midnapore have industrial belt as well as irrigated land area as well as largest forest area of West Bengal.
There are lots of tourist destination comes under West Midnapore area.
West Midnapore is also neighbor of mineral belt state of Jharkhand and industrial belt of Jamshedpur area.
Just a few time back this area become the epicenter of Maoist region due to dense forest area of Kolaboni and Jhargram but now the rebel return to main stream due to Govt. effort.
This district has well known for the tourist belt of jhargram bel pahari region.
There is many colleges and universities in the midnapore town.
